Top Tips for Getting Employed in Nigeria

If you want to work in a country with almost 180 million people, be prepared. The competition is huge, but the rewards are great. Nigerian jobs are not globally popular for nothing. Just search online and you will find tons of articles providing tips on finding a job in this part of the world. What's the magic? That might be for you to find out.

Whether or not you're fresh out of college, there are steps you can take to increase your chances of getting hired. Here are the top 5:

1. Hit them with your CV.

Your CV shouldn't only tell your interviewers about your academic and employment backgrounds. It should also blow their mind. Be different without being outrageous. The idea is to show that you have the skills and talent they need. Of course, the first and most important rule in CV-making is, be truthful. Never lie.

2. Check out unadvertised opportunities.

There's a new trend among Nigerian companies thesedays. They won't announce their job vacancies publicly, but will instead look for the right candidate by word-of-mouth or recruiting internally among their current employees. These are probably the best opportunities you can chase. Being able to position yourself in a place where you can vie for the roles, makes it easier for you to find the right job.

3. Let them hunt you.

Employers usually recruit among senior employees for managerial vacancies. Sometimes though, they may just get online and search for prospects. If your CV is right there, you will be on their path. That saves them time because it will be easier to get your information. As the jobseeker, you will also be freed from the trouble of scanning job adverts.  For more details about job search, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employment_website.

4. Pick the companies you apply to.

Be smart if you want to be successful as a jobseeker in Nigeria. Go for big, established companies that can offer you the best career opportunities and security. Believe in yourself and apply to these organizations. At least, they're easier to find. Because of their size, these companies will probably have job adverts everywhere.

5. Get networking.

When in Africa, you have to "know people who know people." Take that adage seriously when job hunting in Nigeria. Get networking with people who can help you find the right career path. With social media, there's no reason for you not to be successful. Use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the rest to find you your dream job in Nigeria, see here!
